Using social media to start conversations and bring attention to different problems, projects, heroes and solutions is nothing new. The news cycle is ongoing and sure to let you know what’s happening. Many times, however, you hear about big accomplishments, the unknown terrors of the world, the cute cats that exist. Everyone thinks they have to have something big and important to talk about: world hunger, homelessness, justice but every cause, even a small one, deserves to be given some attention.
Change always starts on a small scale.
We all care about something; we’re human after all. There are a million issues in the world. It’s not a perfect place and it may never be but every single thing you care about will not be big and life-changing. It doesn’t mean you are the only one who cares about the subject deeply. This is why social media is amazing. It reminds you every day that you are not alone. That you are a little kooky, that you are an individual in a world of individuals. That difference really can make you more alike.
Whether you care about putting more parks in your neighborhoods, having better lit areas on the way home or saving the disappearing botanical gardens up the block, let social media help you find and amplify your voice to be heard and make some impact in the local world you share with your neighbors.
Choose an outcome
After you have chosen a cause, ask yourself what it is you really want. Be as specific as possible. Do you want 2 parks per district? Or oil burning lamps instead of the ones on the street now? As you spread your message, you want to make sure the people you reach understand the problem and the solution you are hoping to achieve.
You have to get your message in front of people. How do you want to go about this? There are niche sites that cater to particular causes. A good example of this is LinkedIn – it’s solely for professionals looking to network. You can find niche social media sites or you can head to the more popular ones like Instagram, which even lets you buy followers as a marketing tactic to get more eyes on your message.
The platform you choose may dictate your marketing. Instagram is visual heavy, so having dazzling pictures and videos at the forefront of your messaging would be a good idea. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s engaging and shows the importance of your message.
Social media has leveled the playing field so to speak. Now, more than ever, people have the opportunity to be heard and share their stories with the rest of the world. This has led to amazing change, untold horrors captured for everyone to see and amazing, everyday people being honored. It can definitely get overwhelming at times. With all the big changes happening on social media, it’s easy to forget it all starts with having the guts to share.
